Scotty Boman - Director at Large Candidate
Location?
Balfour Road
Why are you running for this office?
I believe we should bring back the Arise Walk. It was an excellent community outreach activity. I also support reviving the neighborhood beautification awards. Polling members of the community, to see if they support a return to the Saturday afternoon meeting schedule, would also be a good idea.
I also believe MorningSide can become much more functional by being better organized and making better use of the data it has compiled over time. This includes updating contact information based on the most recent sign-in sheets at meetings. I would like to help make that happen.
How do you describe MorningSide and what role do you play in it?
MorningSide has been my home. I was born and raised in Detroit and have been a resident of the MorningSide community in the same house on Balfour Rd. for 16 years.
As a child, I lived just across the street from what is now MorningSide on East Outer Drive, and I attended church and Boy Scout meetings at what was Christ United Methodist Church. I went to movies at the Alger. I have fond memories of building model boats and cars at the Cannon Recreation.
What are two skills/attributes that will make you an asset to our board?
I am out-going and willing to speak to all of my neighbors:
I have knocked on every door in Morningside at least a few times. Once was when I successfully petitioned to create District 4’s Community Advisory Council (Which I chaired in 2021).
I was a street ambassador on the MorningSide Board since I was first elected to it in 2013 up to the end of my service in 2019. I am currently a Balfour Block Captain. I‘m a member of the 5th Precinct Community relations council and was Vice President of the MEC neighborhood Patrol for a few years.
I volunteer frequently:
I am volunteer with local food banks. This includes assisting the Morningside Foodbank on Balfour and East Warren until it closed, and my current volunteer work with the Bethany Food Pantry.
I was DJ for the annual Holiday party and chaired the Bylaws Committee. Also I participated in the Motor City Makeover, Angels Night Patrols and the Arise Walk.

Nicolas Hall - Director at Large Candidate
Location?

Why are you running for this office?
I am running for a Director at-large position because, simply put, I love this neighborhood and I want to help make it a more active and attractive place to live. As a board member for the last two years, I have committed myself to building the organization’s online infrastructure. This includes the website, email blast system, Zoom account, and text messaging service. In the last year, I have also tried to put on events for the community to come together in-person in a safe, COVID-appropriate way. Here, I am most proud of our neighborhood bike rides and cleanups which foster a sense of curiosity, community, and pride. If my fellow Morningsiders see it fit to elect me to another term, I would be honored to continue serving the community.
How do you describe MorningSide and what role do you play in it?
MorningSide is a community that has been through a lot, especially in the last 10-15 years. But it is healing, evident in the rising home values and home renovations. MorningSide has beautiful 1920’s housing stock and exceptional neighbors that are warm and inviting. As a relatively new member of the community, it is my role to listen. I want to support the people that have been here for decades, to help highlight or amplify the concerns of our long-term neighbors. My secondary role is to showcase the neighborhood — to market our community — so new families move in.
What are two skills/attributes that will make you an asset to our board?
I think my positivity and energy make me an asset to the board. In terms of skills, I am tech-savvy and have a good understanding of online communication tools.
