Summer Camp: June 20 - August 11, 2022
MorningSide Summer Camp is coming to a close, our Literacy and Arts Summer Camp for kids offered so many fun, exciting, and knowledgeable programs and events for kids to be active and expand their learning skills this summer. Children have gained achievements and learn values of teamwork and individual responsibility in daily tasks in a healthy learning environment. In order to build individual character, confidence and skills we have orchestrated a wide range of sports, workshops, and inclusive activities for the children to participate in. Summer Camp began Monday June 20th and ends on Thursday August 11th with a “Back To School Fun Day” Event programming from Monday to Thursday starting 10am and ending at 3pm.

Our Summer Programs include ABC Mouse, Lunch (Meet Up & Eat Up), Arts & scraps, Taekwondo, Garden Team, Reading is Fundamental, Improv, and many other programs/activities. We will also have special events such as our MorningSide Camp Tees, Water Fight, Elephant toothpaste, Fathers Day Event, and Juneteenth as well.

Good Vibz Yoga & Well-Being
Yoga is a way of exercising that is incorporated to encourage self- confidence and a healthier outlook. Yoga instructor, Chantia Thompson leads groups of all ages into a time of relaxation while providing sessions that help regulate stress and anxiety, and to calm down naturally. On Wednesdays between 11 am - 12 pm, Mrs. Thompson also does enriching activities with kids to improve their overall mental stimulation outside of physical performance.

Arts and Scraps: June 22 - August 10
Arts and Scraps is a non-profit organization focused on reducing urban waste by repurposing materials and offering scholarship funds that support local artists, instructors, and/or non-profit in the realm of Arts. Outside of Arts and Scraps giving Brilliant Detroit MorningSide a scholarship to receive art supplies for our other in-house programs, we have been hosting an Arts and Scraps Program for the entire duration of our summer camp! During an hour for our summer camp Arts and Scraps hosts helped create & learn about different animal species through art with our children! They have created Bats out of foam, raffle tickets, and glitter; they have made penguins and learned a lot of facts about them as well!

Weekly on Wednesdays from 2 - 3pm

Reading is Fundamental: June 24 - August 11
RIF provides resources such as books, STEM-themed classroom activities, professional development for educators, and parent engagement materials. Reading is Fundamental helps strengthen literacy skills in children by actively engaging them in the learning process. This program provides kids with the opportunity to obtain the fundamental building blocks to achieve their highest potential by engaging them with culturally relevant books and literacy activities.

Weekly on Thursday from 1 - 2pm

Meet Up & Eat Up: June 21 - August 9
In order to feed our children during summer camp, we have help from Wayne Metro’s Meet Up & Eat Up Snack Wagon! This program is essentially lunch on wheels; they come in at a specific time once or twice a week and provide lunch meals for our summer campers. These meals not only will help sustain our campers but will ensure everyone has equal access to healthy food in our community.

Parent as First Teacher: June 20 - August 11
Brilliant Detroit MorningSide wants to celebrate the people who teach children first, our parents/guardians. Our summer camp will be filled with volunteers and parents alike who will help aid in the daily operations process of the summer camp. Each Parent as First Teacher will be compensated for their time with us to show our appreciation of how much our parents/ guardians really are the lifeline to our community and organization! This group has also been trained to host certain literacy programs, which allows our Parent as First Teachers to become role models for multiple kids in our community and not just for their own.

Daily throughout summer camp

Taekwondo
Children ages 6 & up have learned the fundamentals of Taekwondo every Wednesday from 2pm-3pm in person. One of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts. Taekwondo teaches the importance of discipline and emphasizes the physical fitness components and awareness.
