Detroit Celebrates Juneteenth

Detroit recently joined the growing number of cities making June 19 a paid holiday for city workers. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when federal troops marched into Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that President Abraham Lincoln had signed two years before, freeing the last enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth was made a federal holiday in 2021.

Our own Eastside Community Network is one of many organizations throughout the metro Detroit area celebrating Juneteenth with a variety of events. ECN’s activities will take place on June 17. Click here to see a full schedule of other celebrations around town throughout the month.
