E. Warren DevCo Gets Major Grant

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the East Warren Farmers Market and E. Warren Development Corporation (EWDC) office will be getting significant upgrades in 2023.

The money will allow EWDC to add a 36-unit market shed to the weekly farmers market located in the parking lot next to the EWDC office in the old Pizza Hut building. Two commercial kitchens and several pop-up units for retail businesses will be added. Picnic tables, community activities, and public Wi-Fi will be in the mix as well.

“When you’re buying something at the farmers market, it’s making an impact on your local community,” EWDC Executive Director Joe Rashid told the Detroit Free Press recently. “In the first two years of the market - we’ve had 36 markets, and $85,000 in revenue has all gone back into our local economy. And with the third season of the market now, our goal is to just ramp that up and really build upon that to make sure that we can really support our community as best as we possibly can.”

EWDC has had its share of challenges with the construction of the E. Warren streetscape at its doorstep, but that project should be completed by the end of this year, and EWDC is poised to do great things for our community in 2023.
