Great Vibes at the Summer Sizzler

Our Summer Sizzler neighborhood block party was an overwhelming success. Neighbors from all across Morningside came together to hang out and have a great time. And we had perfect weather for it — sunny in the 70’s with a nice breeze.

Grillmaster Adrian Green dutifully served up hot dogs, while Morningside food truck Tacos Hernandez provided delicious tacos and drinks.

Music was provided by Marty Bulger, Principal of EEVPA at Finney. Marty served as the DJ /emcee and did an outstanding job partnering with Bea Davis who provided an hour of hustle lessons.

The Detroit Fire Department stopped by the event. Kids were able to go into the fire truck and use a working fire hose. It was a great sight to see — happy children shooting water hundreds of feet in the air!

Vendors sold artwork, t-shirts, jewelry, and house plants. (And I scored a vintage Detroit Tigers shirt!)

There were plenty of games on site – badminton, football, frisbee, cornhole, hula hoops.

Face painting was a really popular activity. And Board member Alex Afanasyev brought a largerthan-life Russian chess board, which galvanized the attention of a lot of kids.

In terms of attendance, we had 125 people signin at the Morningside table. But as you and I both know not everyone signs in at these events. So I’m going to go ahead and put that number closer to 200.

A big thank you goes out to the Summer Sizzler event committee, and Susan Newell in particular, for the hard work involved in putting on this event. We can’t wait to do it again next year!
