Motor City Grounds Crew has partnered with the Disability Network of Wayne County to provide senior citizens with an exciting training and networking series entitled “The Senior Sun Garden Experience.” The Sun Garden Experience provides participants with a hands-on introduction to organic urban gardening taught by experienced organic growers and educators.

Gardening offers an excellent opportunity for older adults to stay active while spending time outdoors this summer. Program participants are learning the benefits of growing a variety of vegetables, flowers, and herbs in containers as well as raised garden beds. Moreover, participants are learning how to maintain a healthy diet that is focused on nutrient-rich foods.

Research indicates that as we age our caloric needs will probably decrease, while our nutrient needs stay the same or increase. Eating nutrient-rich foods helps the body get the vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates and fats it needs.

Participants are in for a treat this summer because they will also have the opportunity to tour Featherstone Garden. Transportation will be provided by Motor City Grounds Crew. Rooted in Detroit’s MorningSide neighborhood, Featherstone Garden strives to educate the community on health and wellness benefits of a plant-centered diet. As a non-certified organic operation, the garden intercrops all-natural greens, veggies, herbs and flowers that complement each other as companion plants, support native pollinators, and contribute to a healthy urban ecosystem.

Annie Hakim and Aaron Smith are both Co-Owners of the Featherstone Garden and together they offer tons of experience in the area of growing organic vegetables. You can sign up for the Senior Sun Garden Experience on Eventbrite or just stop by to see us at Bethany Lutheran Church located at 11475 E. Outer Drive, Detroit, MI 48224 on Saturdays from 10am-2pm.
