Morningside’s Finest: Ulysses Newkirk
Ulysses Newkirk may be new to MorningSide, but he’s already putting his varied talents to good use here. In March, Ulysses was asked to help build the new broadcast studio housed in the East Warren Tool Library, and to do web design for EWTL. One thing led to another, and as of last month, he’s EWTL’s new Tool Librarian, replacing Andrew Ianncone.
Ulysses is also the EWTL’s newest resident, living in and renovating an apartment over the tool library, which he plans to make available to “visiting creatives.” He defines that term very broadly. “I have no limits on what can be art…If you build a movie set or a parkscape, you’re an artist.” The downstairs he sees as a great work space for all kinds of creative projects.
Ulysses has had several careers - in graphic design, web design, theater set design and construction, and food service. When he isn’t busy with the broadcasting studio and librarian duties, you may find Ulysses teaching “art as activism” at the Feedom Freedom Garden on Manistique in the Jefferson- Chalmers neighborhood.
Welcome to MorningSide, Ulysses. We expect you to be a great addition to the EWTL and our whole community.
