Attempted Break in at Morningside Cafe Brings Full Support of Community

Shocked, saddened, and hurt were some of the immediate emotions that I felt the morning of Friday, December 27th, 2024. It was on this day that two individuals tried their hands of breaking into Morningside Cafe.

Once I had arrived to see the damage of our window and the amount of shattered glass that was scattered throughout the inside of our establishment, I wasn’t in any mood to open that morning, but there were several of our regular guest who arrived around the same time as I did.

Despite how I felt in that moment, in the back of my mind I know many people look forward to coming to Morningside Cafe. That is why we are here everyday. To serve the people of our community.

After reviewing the surveillance footage, the attempted break-in occurred around five o’clock in the morning by two individuals. One of those individuals I immediately recognized due to his visits in the past begging for spare change or to do any type of work to gain a few dollars.

The impact of this story by far exceeded my expectations as local news affiliates CBS Detroit, WDIV, and WXYZ all aired coverage of the story.

We had set out a goal of raising $850 to help assist with the cost of repairing the window. To date, donations have reached over $7600.

We received so much support from members within our own community and beyond. Complete strangers have traveled from various places across Southeastern Michigan and outside of the region just to come by and offer their support.

We are still amazed by the outpouring of love and support we have received. As unfortunate as this situation was, so many people have showed the power and importance of what community is all about.
