EWDC Breaks Ground on Exciting New Public Market

East Warren Development Corporation broke ground last month on a new 10,000 sq. ft. public market that will house retail stores, a small grocery story, community space, a farmers’ market, and the offices of EWDC. The public market will be built in the lot next to the current EWDC building that will always be known to long-timers as “the old Pizza Hut.” Commercial kitchens are currently being created there.

Mayor Duggan, District 4 Councilmember Latisha Johnson, and representatives from funding organizations including Invest Detroit, the Gilbert Family Foundation, and Ralph C. Wilson Foundation, spoke at the press conference before picking up shovels and putting on hard hats for a symbolic ground breaking in front of dozens of stakeholders from the nearby communities. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has also been a major funder of the E. Warren redevelopment.

According to Joe Rashid, Executive Director of EWDC, “The E. Warren Public Market and commercial kitchen spaces will offer a permanently affordable environment for local businesses to flourish and a gathering place for our community….We are continually inspired by the resilience and innovation within our community and look forward to collaborating to develop this campus.”

This is indeed another exciting new development for the Morningside, East English Village, and Cornerstone Village communities. We will follow its progress closely and update our readers as the project develops.
