Juneteenth - A Day of Reflection

To many across the United States, Juneteenth represents the second independence day as enslaved people could finally celebrate their freedom. This Sunday will mark the 157th anniversary of that day. Although many in the African American community have observed this day for years, it is important to note that when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law in 1863, slaves in the state of Texas were not freed until two years later. Juneteenth was finally established as a national holiday once President Joe Biden signed the bill into law last June.

This day presents the opportunity to reflect, as well as learn more about the history of this significant holiday. The Detroit Free Press put together an amazing list of events taking place to commemorate the holiday.
