Habitat for Humanity Detroit has six active housing projects, both new builds and rehabs, in Morningside. Habitat has been working in the Morningside neighborhood for about 17 years.

Over those years they have built and rehabbed over 150 homes in the area, and their work continues today. Much of the organization’s work in Morningside can be seen on Lakepointe.

Currently on the block, there are two active new homes under construction and one rehab project. The new homes will have three bedrooms and one bath and will meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for accessibility. All rehabs vary based on the conditions of the existing homes.

Founded in 1976, Habitat’s mission is “Seeking to bring God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope”. They strive for a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

According to Mary Ellen Kearney, Director of Philanthropy at Habitat Detroit, these three homes will be completed by the end of 2025.

The two new homes already have homeowners selected, but there are more homes that Habitat Detroit has available to show. They also say there are many more homes expected to become available in 2025 and 2026.

It is clear to see that Habitat Detroit’s work continues in the neighborhood. If you are interested in learning more about what Habitat Detroit is all about be sure to visit their website at: https://habitatdetroit.org/

The organization also hosts a series of classes such as “Becoming a Habitat Detroit Homeowner”, “Life Planning & Legacy” and more. Check out the programs page on their website to register.
